For many women, poor PE experiences have had a negative long-term impact on their desire to be active, with a third of women surveyed in January 2023 saying PE put them off sports for life. Girls today are also struggling to enjoy sport and exercise with only 35% agreeing they enjoy taking part compared to 56% of boys and worryingly 57% of girls aren’t hitting the government’s daily activity guidelines.
To tackle this problem, Sport England’s award winning This Girl Can campaign joined forces with education and social impact experts Hopscotch to change this with Studio You, moving PE in a new direction to see:
An increase in girls reporting they feel included and find PE fun
Less active girls reporting a greater ability to choose and shape how they are active in PE
PE teachers reporting Studio You helps them engage less active students
Taking This Girl Can’s ambitions into schools, Studio You is a product of countless conversations with teachers and teenage girls, culminating in a first of its kind digital platform that empowers teachers to create positive PE experiences for all girls, regardless of background or ability. Inclusive, accessible and curriculum-linked, it features over 140 video PE lessons from dance to yoga, combat, fitness, and more to support time-poor teachers to deliver non-competitive disciplines to their least engaged students who have struggled to enjoy traditional team sports. Lessons are led by a relatable and diverse cast of instructors, breaking from traditional PE, normalising the realities of exercise and helping the next generation of women to discover a way of being active that works for them.
